Abstract

Long term alcohol consumption can damage body tissues including the kidneys. Kidney damage is characterized by the presence of malondialdehyde compounds, one of the products resulting from lipid peroxidation. Antioxidants were given to overcome the damage. Antioxidants used here are roselle flowers that contain antioxidant flavonoids. This study aims to determine the effect of roselle flower extract on MDA levels in rats induced by 20% ethanol. A total of 30 white male Wistar rats were grouped into six groups with different treatments. Five treatment groups were given 20% ethanol, and one group wasn’t given ethanol as a negative control. Six groups consist of: (1) standard feed and aquades (Negative Control / K0), (2) standard feed and ethanol 20% orally (Positive Control / K1), (3) vitamin C (Positive Control 2 / K2), (4) roselle flower extract 250 mg / kgBB (Treatment 1 / P1), (5) roselle flower extract 500 mg / kgBB (Treatment 2 / P2), and (6) roselle flower extract 750 mg / kgBB (Treatment 3 / P3 ). The study was conducted 30 days ago by surgery procedure, kidney extraction, and measurement of kidney’s MDA levels. For data analysis, the Kruskal Walis test were used and continued with the Mann Whitney Post Hoc test. The study showed that, P1, P2, and P3 groups had lower MDA levels than the control group. In conclusion, roselle flower extract can reduce levels of kidney’s MDA and the most effective dose is a dose of 250 mg / kgBB / day.
