EFFECT OF LIME PEEL (Citrus aurantifolia) EXTRACT ON SPERM MOTILITY OF WISTAR RATS (Rattus norvegicus) EXPOSED TO CIGARETTE SMOKE
Abstract
Cigarette smoke contains free radicals that cause oxidative stress thereby damaging sperm motility. Lime peel (Citrus aurantifolia) contains flavonoids antioxidant which can bind with free radicals from cigarette smoke. This research aimed to know the effect of administering lime peel extract to sperm motility of Wistar rats which were exposured to cigarette smoke. Thirty Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: Negative Control (Standard feed/K1), Positive Control (Exposure to 2sticks/day cigarette smoke/K2), and 3 treatment groups with administering of lime peel extract of 1,26/100gBB/day dose (K3), lime peel extract of 2,52/100gBB/day (K4), and lime peel extract of 5,04/100gBB/day (K5) after being exposured to 2 sticks of cigarette smoke. Data analysis used One Way Anova Test and Post Hoc Bonferroni. Mean sperm motility of K1 61,7%; K2 34,2%; K3 51,7%; K4 61,3%; and K5 66,4%. Post Hoc Bonferroni showed that there was significant difference between K3, K4, K5, with positive control group with p-value 0,000, meaning that lime peel extract can increase sperm motility by hidrogen atom transfer by flavonoids to free radicals thereby decreasing the number of free radicals. Lime peel extract of 5,04mg/100gBB/day dose was the effective dose to increase sperm motility that exposured to cigarette smoke.
